Reproductive ageing - a basic and clinical update

In most areas of the developed world, the average age of the population has almost doubled between the end of the 19th century and today. From a medical point of view this has resulted, on one hand, in the appearance of ‘new’ diseases due to the body ageing and, on the other, in lines of research aimed at fighting the effects of ageing on cells, tissues and systems. This research has been especially active in the field of reproductive medicine, because the increase of average age in many areas of the world has also led to an increased in the age when couples decide to have children. The aim of this symposium is to provide a general overview of the mechanisms of ageing in biology focusing, in particular, on updates on how ageing affects reproductive function, and reviewing outcomes of researches aimed to find solutions to improve outcomes of assisted reproduction in aged women.
